Overview

Reporting to Veterinary staff and under limited direction, the Behavioral Management Services Supervisor will oversee all aspects of the day-to-day operations of Lovelace Biomedical's research animal behavioral and enrichment programs.

 

Will be responsible for developing, implementing, updating and maintaining the Institute's Behavioral Management and Enrichment Program which includes overseeing and training staff on a variety of techniques and practices; designing, implementing and analyzing animal behavior experiments; working with veterinary and animal care staff to develop appropriate practices and protocols for the appropriate care of a variety of research animal species; collecting data and performing statistical analysis on a variety of data in support of behavioral service interventions and research projects; and performing all other related duties and tasks as required or assigned.

 

The Supervisor will also be responsible for ensuring all aspects of the Program are compliant with the USDA Animal Welfare Regulations, PHS Policy, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Biology, Animal Sciences, or a related field, and a minimum of 5 years of directly-related experience in research animal behavior, training and enrichment as well as a minimum of 5 years of directly-related experience in collection of behavioral data in research animals and at least two years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained.

 

For individuals currently employed by Lovelace Biomedical, an additional 2 years of directly-related Institute employment may be substituted for the supervisorial requirements.

 

Must have a demonstrated and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all aspects research animal care as well a fundamental understanding of animal husbandry requirements, methods and techniques.  A comprehensive knowledge of local, state and federal regulations pertaining to the handling and care of research animals is required.  Specific and demonstrated knowledge of USDA regulations, PHS policy and AALAC guidelines is required.

 

Requires professional-level written and verbal communication skills, a high degree of professionalism, excellent judgment and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with both administrative and scientific colleagues.  Must be able to manage a wide variety of complex tasks and projects simultaneously with minimal guidance.  Requires professional-level proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn department-specific systems as needed.

 

A post-offer physical and background check are required.  Ability to gain and maintain access to Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) is required.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

Master’s degree in a directly-related field, AALAS certification, supervisory experience and knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) requirements for animal facilities is desired.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in laboratory and vivarium/animal housing environments.  Will frequently stand, sit, walk, kneel, crawl, reach/work overhead, frequently lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 50 pounds, perform repetitive and perform desk-based computer tasks.  Will wear personal protective equipment which may include a respirator.  Will work in close proximity to research animals and may be required to work in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present which may require vaccinations.
